Ceramics Limburg – founded in the historic village of Tegelen – has been the specialist in machine and handmade ceramics since 1978. As a manufacturer, they supply pottery and stoneware to countless companies, retailers and garden centres throughout Europe. The appreciation for craftsmanship is at the heart of their quality and is reflected in their always surprising and changing collections. So too in the new colourful plant pots, eye-catching (wall) plates and handmade pottery that perfectly fit the TICA theme Festival Vibe. TICA’s editors spoke to the team about the company’s origins, the ever-changing market and their new collection.

What is the story behind Ceramics Limburg?

For that, we have to go back almost 50 years. In 1978, Harry Sloesen and Mia Sloesen-Ernst founded the ceramics production company. Perseverance and an unconditional love of the trade typified this period. Twenty years later, they passed the baton to their sons, and since 1998 Tony Sloesen has been the owner of the company. Until that same year, ceramics production still took place in Tegelen. But, a new era dawned and, of necessity, machine production moved to Romania.

Is that still the case today?

No, as of 2012, we have moved closer to production again as a team and are currently making entirely in-house productions exclusively in the Netherlands and Portugal. Largely handmade, by the way.

Where can our TICA members know you from?

Tony Sloesen is thus the owner of the company and focuses on handmade ceramics with over 35 years of experience. In addition, he is contact person for Belgium and all other countries. Then, for many TICA members who shop in Aalsmeer, Henk Louwe is a familiar face and Ceciel Dielen, together with her team, is the contact person at TICA Venlo. Claudius Gmerek is our contact for the southern Netherlands and Germany. Of course, we still have colleagues at the head office; Bert, Maria, John Wessel, Senna and Noah.

How is Ceramics Limburg different from other players in the industry?

We aim to provide all customers with quality, sustainable and responsible ceramic products. Therefore, every six months we present a new, timeless and colourful ceramic collection, which is designed in the Netherlands and produced in our own factories.

What type of products do you sell?

Our collections mainly consist of flower pots, vases, bowls and plates, which is why many florists, garden centres, concept stores and other green professionals buy from us. We like to see our customers happy; we therefore do a lot to keep these buyers happy. We have had a very good relationship with many of them for many years.

How did the collaboration with TICA come about?

Since 2010, we can be found at TICA Aalsmeer and TICA Venlo. We are pleased that this also allows us to serve our clients who require smaller quantities. Every client deserves the same attention and the service TICA offers is therefore in line with what we stand for. TICA is always on the move, keeps a close eye on the market and responds to the world that is constantly changing. That’s very nice!

Are you capitalising on trends?

We carry a timeless collection based on small(er) trends and of course tailored to our customers’ needs. We do believe it is important to keep producing our own ‘music’ at all times. That’s what we call it. We follow our own course and apparently that works; our customers often come back.

Summer is just around the corner; what can we expect from you?

Lots of colour! Our latest ceramic collection is brighter in colour than usual, allowing us to respond well to the latest trends and our customers’ needs. More diversity in shapes are also available.

Sounds good! Any more previews you would like to share?

The ceramics collection is supplemented in the summer months by baskets made of sea grass and macramé pots and pendants. In mid-summer – in July and August – we will again present the updated ceramics collection.

And, you have recently opened your own restaurant, right?

Sure! In 2023, we opened our own restaurant SOBER, located right next to our atelier in Tegelen. Our customers can visit the atelier by appointment, with good coffee and fresh Limburg flan of course, and then round off their visit with a delicious dinner in restaurant SOBER. Only local products are used here and our guests can enjoy our home-made Limburg wine from ZAVEL.

Do you have any tips for retailers to get their businesses ready for summer?

Feature lots of greenery in every room of your shop, restaurant or showroom. Surely this really gives your interior an extra ‘touch’. In mid-April, we were at the Salone Del Mobile in Milan and there it was once again emphasised; green styling will remain incredibly topical in the coming years.
