Barbara Sikking is owner of BSIK, a wholesaler with a range that will make you happy. When she took the plunge in 2011, little did she know that her ‘entrepreneurial hobby’ would grow into a thriving business. With her eclectic seasonal items, timeless tableware and colourful plant pots, Barbara stands out from the crowd with BSIK. Inspired by spring and in line with the Eclectic Sunset TICA theme, Barbara presents an updated collection this spring. TICA’s editors spoke to the passionate, positive entrepreneur about it.

What is the story behind BSIK?

It was clear to me early on that working for a boss was not for me. I was always thinking of plans on how to start for myself. Having a wholesale home accessories business was not something I aspired to, but it happened to come my way. And then I thought, why not? My father had his own shop, so I knew I could go to him with all my questions. I went for it and, thanks to the support of my parents and later my partner, BSIK grew from something I did on the side as a hobby to a serious business.

What does BSIK’s product range consist of?

Everything for the set table such as crockery, cutlery and table textiles as well as dining chairs, side tables, plant pots and hangers. I work together with the brand Mica Decorations. They have a very diverse collection with about 20,000 items of which over 3,000 items have the ‘Because We Care’ label and are therefore sustainably produced. Mica Decorations always works with versatile themes and I pick my own range from this. I also offer the Wunderle range at TICA Venlo. This is a German brand that works with people with disabilities and offers typical German products such as the ‘Wundertüte’.

Where can TICA members know you from?

Since 2011, I can be found at TICA Aalsmeer or TICA Venlo almost every week as an exhibitor. My mother has been helping me for years. Together we ensure that the stands always look inviting and colourful; they are a visual incentive for TICA members who walk past. I aim for visual over-stimulation rather than under-stimulation. I also provide new items in the stands almost every week. Life moves fast; people are constantly looking for new items. In my stands, I translate this speed into a continuously changing range combined with some perennial basic items.

How is the partnership with TICA going?

Good! Years ago, there was not much focus on styling at TICA. A lot has changed, because now it really is a must! The decoration of the stand and the presentation of products really increase traffic and turnover. I am also pleased that TICA launches an inspiring and topical theme every two months – like Eclectic Sunset – and works together with exhibitors on this theme.

Spring is coming; what can we expect from BSIK?

A colour explosion with lots of green, orange and pink! The new ‘Exotic’ tableware line with various plates and bowls with fruit and vegetable prints is really great for catering entrepreneurs. The colourful tulip vases look perfect on the counter of a shop and the summery Aston trays brighten up a garden table.

And, which new eye-catcher will make a typical BSIK customer really happy?

A typical BSIK customer has guts and loves colour. At some of the Eclectic Sunset TICA inspiration points, you will find parasols with various colourful prints; totally on trend. With these, you can make your shop window really inviting.
