Just a quick introduction!

When you visit a festival, conference or trade fair this summer, you will undoubtedly spot the eye-catching creations of This Affects. This ‘experience agency’ excels in event styling and tailor-made event concepts. For years, Bianca (Creative Director) and Mikki (Styling Producer) have been shopping at TICA for the most unique items and eye-catchers with which to bring their productions to life. At the end of May, This Afffects will be styling the annual TICA barbecue in Venlo. TICA’s editors spoke with them about the preparations, the matching TICA theme Festival Vibe and the upcoming summer.

Who are you and how did This Affects come into existence?

Bianca In 2010, I started Business Events Amsterdam, which provided business events. In 2017, in made the choice to focus further on the creative side and from this This Affects was eventually born in 2021. Now we devise and produce customised concepts for event and festival styling.

Mikki I started with flower and stand styling at trade fairs and then I gained experience in wedding and event styling in Sicily. Very instructive! That challenge confirmed that event styling is my passion. In 2023, I made the switch to This Affects. I am responsible for the styling department with the mission of taking concepts to a higher level of experience.

How do you turn creative concepts into live productions?

After a request, our concept department starts with a kick-off, which is sometimes joined by Mikki’s styling team. This working method allows styling knowledge to be shared and makes it easier to translate a concept into a live production. Because our concepters and producers are in constant contact with each other, quality is guaranteed.

How is This Affects different from other agencies?

We receive many different requests every year, so we are now widely specialised. For instance, we provide styling for set dressing, festivals, conferences and regularly take on the total production of events. We also have a lot of in-house knowledge. For instance, stylists who also make their own materials and objects, event and technical producers, but also colleagues who ensure that we can carry out experiences in a safe manner because they have knowledge of Risk, Crowd and Safety.

Which This Affects projects are you most proud of?

Bianca The Lowlands editions; specifically the Nespresso stand. We were commissioned by brand activation agency Kumpany and were asked to come up with the styling for Nespresso. We opted for a complete green styling with lots of plants, green walls, botanical activations and matching furniture. These are long days, but really cool projects where there is a lot of laughter and the energy is really good.

Mikki Where we as a team could really show what we have to offer was at the introduction festival of the Hogeschool van Amsterdam. This was a mix of indoor and outdoor styling. The new students walked a colour route and discovered the school facilities this way. This allowed me to work a lot with colour; something I really enjoy doing.

And, at which events will we spot This Affects this summer?

At dance festivals such as Awakenings, Mysteryland and Outdoor Stereo but also public events such as the HvA’s introduction festival, Wine Festival Hoorn and corporate festivals for: JBL, DC Klinieken, Group M and VSDV.

How did you end up at TICA?

Just after starting This Affects, we received an enquiry that made us fly to Ibiza with the whole team. This was a five-day project for which we needed a lot of bohemian styling. Shopping at TICA was then a logical choice. We have been fans ever since! The diverse range ensures that we can stock a completely suitable styling every time.

Are there any specific brands or items you source from TICA?

We buy a lot of packaging materials such as ribbons and wrapping paper, but also various cushions, poufs, home decoration and artificial flowers. For each project, we look at which brands are a good match. We buy a lot from Light & Living, Colmore, Mini Art Products, Lauco, Kersten and Lime Light.

What can we expect from the decorations you provided for TICA’s barbecue?

We will combine the latest trends of festival styling with the TICA theme Festival Vibe. So expect lots of colour, crazy patterns and glittering disco balls. We will use green styling and coloured plants for an extra touch.

Do you have any tips for starting stylists in the event industry?

Mikki Grab every opportunity you get! This starts with an internship; a broad experience in this profession is so important. Put 100 per cent effort into every apprenticeship; this is always rewarded in the end. And, see what your strengths are; what do you have an eye for, what do you excel at? After all, there are never enough stylists who can think innovatively.

Bianca Keep looking around! Put your phone away, look at the space and absorb all the shapes and colours like a sponge. If you can incorporate this inspiration into your work, I think you will go a long way.
