Twice a year, we highlight a TICA Talent; these are start-up, small brands. This time it is MUSA Intimates, an innovative brand that creates comfortable and eco-friendly lingerie. Their journey began with the idea of using alternative textiles and emphasising sustainability. MUSA Intimates aims to create a world where being comfortable in your skin is the new beauty ideal. The brand uses alternative materials, with a strong focus on banana textiles. Each collection is enhanced with unique items, enriching the fruit basket of fabrics.

The story behind MUSA Intimates

MUSA Intimates was founded by five women studying Art and Economics at the Utrecht School of the Arts. Inspired by their shared interests in feminism, sexuality and sustainability, they realised that these topics were not yet adequately represented in the lingerie sector. After extensive research, they discovered the versatility of banana fibres, derived from plants that are cut down after one harvest and often dumped. These fibres proved ideal for textiles. Their partner in India is helping women move from unhealthy tobacco plantations to organic banana plantations. By using banana fibres for their first collection, they created a unique and meaningful story. Thus, MUSA was born.

Sustainable lingerie innovations

MUSA’s range includes comfortable underwear and playful lingerie pieces. The tops are made of 39% banana fibre, 59% organic cotton and 2% elastane, carefully blended for comfort and durability. With each collection, MUSA introduces a new textile blend, such as Seacell textiles. This unisex boxer is made of 20% Seacell and 80% tencel, with a soft, stretchy interlock knitting technique.

Festive fits & sustainable style

In addition to their regular collection of underwear and tops, TICA members can also purchase a Christmas collection and a men’s collection from October. With the men’s underwear, they also want to introduce men to alternative textiles and the story behind them. This expansion offers customers the opportunity not only to enrich their wardrobe with unique pieces, but also to learn more about the sustainable and innovative materials used by MUSA Intimates. These collections are also great to get or give as gifts.

MUSA Intimates’ clients are mainly women aged between 20 and 35 who are at different stages of life, such as finishing their studies, starting a career, discovering the world, or building a family. They love festivals and adventures and value sustainability and social issues. MUSA’s bananaundies aim to create a world where women are comfortable in a sustainable way, from the inside out. MUSA uses social media channels and offline events to spread this message and be in the midst of its target audience. During the offline events, called ‘MUSA TALKS’, they invite different people to talk about current and socially relevant topics. In this way, MUSA aims to be more than a sustainable clothing label; it strives to build an engaged community.
