During the Salone del Mobile, TICA’s Brand Manager Imke Slabbers and Studio Manager Marloes van Frankenhuyzen dove into Milan to spot the latest trends and find inspiration. For the world’s biggest interior design fair, Milan transformed into the world’s interior design city. “It was great again! We saw a lot and were also very inspired and surprised by the new collections and presentations,” says Imke. Milan Design Week 2023

The 61st edition of Salone del Mobile gave both fashion and interior designers the opportunity to showcase their latest collections. Special collaborations such as Dior x Philippe Starck and G-Star x Maarten Baas proudly displayed their collaborative collections. Marloes: “Unexpected combinations – both in colour and material – surprised us because of the final, fascinating whole.”

Security is and remains important. This became apparent in several ways. The pandemic and current developments are impacting us in one way or another. We are looking for a sense of security and comfort. The ultimate relaxation. This need was met through the use of simple materials, botanical softness and chunky, large furniture in which you feel safe, among other things. “Imke: The balance struck by the various designers is striking. Think big block patterns, graphic shapes combined with ultra-fine weaves or a detailed design. We are really tremendously excited!”

Catchy Colours

Of course, we have been seeing colour in interiors again for some time. In Milan, Marloes and Imke were once again surprised by the striking colour combinations in various collections. Marloes: “Divergent combinations of colour and material create an interesting field of tension and the designers of MOOOI and Draga & Aurel show this beautifully in their collections”.

Think craft furniture in calm earthy tones styled with mint green or black and white graphic accessories. Or how about neon lamps where the reflection on a sustainably produced, transparent table reflects the effect of a rainbow? Truly a beautiful eye-catcher!”. Nature has been a source of inspiration for many designers for centuries and this time too, nature and animal prints have been incorporated in a striking way in wall hangings, curtains, wallpaper prints and fabrics, among others. Imke: “The beauty of nature in your home; who doesn’t want that?”.

Feminine future

Marloes: “We already saw Ikea and Hermès reviving their oldest collections. Inspired by the past, looking to the future”. Actually, this was the common thread for many collections. Reflecting and looking forward. Several designers translated this into their designs. So, again, you saw many natural products (nature is always there, after all) in organic shapes and light basic colours. Marloes: “Hand-embroidered rugs, coarsely woven chairs and (dark) wooden mammoth legs; it’s all allowed to be a bit coarser as long as you can see the basis of nature in it. This is combined with almost futuristic products. Think reflective mirrors, chrome products and transparent furniture”. A refined balance between hard and soft, organic and coarse, past and future.
