Can You Tell Us more about how Swan Market Came to be?

In 2008, I conceived the event Mode Marche. A stock Sample Sale where many well-known designers participated; Iris van Herpen, Mada van Gaans, Jeroen van Tuyl, Bas Kosters. I organized this event for twelve years, and after a few editions, the area manager of Rotterdam Noord asked if we would like to organize it there as well. It would become an outdoor event, while Mode Marche was organized in various art institutions (Booijmans, NAI, Maritime Museum, etc.) Together with the designers, I wasn’t keen on this idea. However, it did inspire me to create Swan Market, which did become a successful outdoor event. The first edition took place in the Zwaanshals (hence the name) and it became a market with creative entrepreneurs selling mostly handmade products, food trucks, music, and a bar. Much later, the Swan Market stores emerged from this. Currently, we have locations in Rotterdam, Utrecht, Leiden, Delft, Breda, and The Hague.

How Do We Recognize a Typical Swan Market Customer?

We have a broad target audience, primarily consisting of women. This applies to both our events and our stores. Couples, friends on a day out, mothers with daughters, and families. We have trendy young women who are mainly interested in jewelry, clothing, and sunglasses, but also women looking for something beautiful for their home. Additionally, a very large portion of our target audience is looking for cool gifts.

What does Swan Market’s assortment consist of?

We want to distinguish ourselves from other interior and lifestyle stores; we want to be just a bit different. We take this into account when selecting our offerings. Our target audience is diverse, and so are their spending patterns. Therefore, we have products that are more expensive, but also very affordable items. In the Swan Market stores, we sell approximately 65% handmade/designed products from various entrepreneurs such as Sera, Gekkigheid, Baagz, Your Fashion Secret, and This is NOT a Pizza. The remaining 35% consists of creative purchases and vintage items. Brands we purchase from TICA include Present Time and Fidrio. Because we have quite a broad target audience, we notice that this mix works very well.

Are there specific brands or items that you primarily purchase at TICA?

Bowls, candles, vases, and mugs always do very well, and I keep purchasing them. When I’m at TICA, I make my ‘regular purchasing round’, but I also look for interesting new brands or items. I do like striking products, and take-away items or gift articles catch my attention; these really align well with Swan Market’s target audience. I’ve been coming to TICA for over seven years, and it’s always quite an experience to do my purchasing there.

Do You Purchase Party Items or Seasonal Items at TICA?

Absolutely! TICA caters to this well. I usually have something in mind that I think will sell well, and then I find it at TICA. That’s great!

A Successful Purchasing Decision at TICA?

Coffee mugs and candles! These are the perfect items for our gift assortment. In addition, I also make dried flower bouquets in a small bottle; very nice!
